Fashion and their lifestyle
This subculture can be seen as, “wearing of casual, folksy clothing and of beads, headbands, used garments, etc.”
(dictionary.com). They could often be found in living in large groups called
“communes.” This subculture did not have
a good reputation with the older members of society. They were viewed as society’s dropouts that
weren’t going to be doing much with their lives.
Hippie groups formed all over the United States; California became the epicenter of many different groups of hippies. The most dedicated hippies lived together in a group called a commune. A commune is a group “of people living together, sharing common interests, property, possessions, resources,” (Wikipedia, Commune). This was a way for all of them to share their ideas and to stay on one page as a group. There are many suspicions about what went on inside these communes and some of them can even be confirmed by those that did take part in living in a commune. For example, talks of public sex with someone new every day and the use of hard drugs were all talked about and gave communes and the hippie subculture a bad name. Many pictures can be found that depict communes in a negative way, but not all hippies lived in communes and not every commune was exactly the same. It all depends on what side of the spectrum is being analyzed. By looking past all of this and analyzing the issues and facts that we have about this time period and the hippie subculture, we can truly understand why and how this subculture formed.
